Born in Q2-1894 in Birstall, Leeds [Leeds 9b:524] to William Chawick and Alice Ann LAND (née BARKER), of 3 Bellbrooke Street, Potter
Newton, Leeds.
1901 census...Clifford [6] was at 3 Bellbrooke Street, Potter Newton, Leeds with his father William C.[45], an upholsterer; his mother [43] and sisters Minnie [17]; Amy [15]; Elsie [11] and brothers Alfred [20] a paper makers clerk, and Claude [9]. All were born in Leeds. 1911 census...Clifford [16] a butchers apprentice was at 16 Craven Terrace, Leeds with his parents and sisters Amy and Elsie. One of the 7 children had died. He is recorded as living and enlisting in Newmarket but no details have been found. |

On the 23rd the Battalion was on the right bank of the Somme between Roncy-le-Grand on the right and Pargny, about two miles downstream. Having crossed the
river, they were then forced back and at the end of the day were holding the left bank. The day he died the Rifle Brigade lost 100 men killed. Of these, 49 were in his battalion. Of the 2nd Battalion, 12 have identified graves, 2 are named on the Arras Memorial and the rest are named on the Pozieres Memorial |
